Dr. Spahr’s infatuation with medicine began in grade school. By high school he had decided to devote his life to helping others through the study of medicine and the science of the body. He completed his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Community Hospitals of Indianapolis and was Board Certified by the American Board of Family Practice in 1986.
Dr. Roger Spahr appreciates the importance of nutritional and metabolic biochemistry and its impact on both wellness and disease. To assist patients with a return to a more healthy existence, Dr. Spahr became a Diplomate with the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine in 2007 in addition to completing the Fellowship in Functional Medicine.
Dr. Spahr grew his practice and developed strong relationships with his patients. Over time he realized that patients more often required more extensive diagnostic evaluations for chronic medical conditions like asthma, chronic fatigue, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), autoimmune conditions (Lupus, MS, Hasihimoto’s thyroiditis), fibromyalgia, and hormonal imbalances etc. Referrals to specialists resulted in traditional interventions. Multiple medications were prescribed, often with side effects. Moreover, the problems persisted. Dr. Spahr’s desire to help the person and not just treat the disease caused him to seek better ways to move patients to wellness. In 1996 he began to implement the core tenets of Functional Medicine a segue to the current application of restorative medicine.
